Little Surprises

Against all odds!

I could have looked straight ahead,

Or at my phone,

Or at the busy people passing,

Wondering what was their hurry.

Meanwhile, a little seed that had been driven by the wind,

Caught in a sidewalk’s seam,

Falling into enough sandy dirt to be rained upon,

Sunned upon,

Had made it’s home.

How long had it been there, when I approached today?

“Look at my beautiful golden being!” she seemed to cry upward.

Two tiny flowers, perhaps seen as weeds to another,

Emerged from a sidewalk crack.

The gifts of hope, fortitude and perseverance

Were evident right there.

I’m glad I looked down!
