The Soil of Humility

The root of humility is “humus,” meaning “earth” as in “soil.”

With dry eyes this morning, while reading Scripture, I was thinking in a negative light about someone, and I felt a tear rolling down my cheek. “Could this be God’s tear?” I wondered.

His sadness enlightened me to a lack of humility in that moment. Who am I to think negative thoughts of another, of God’s child?

Humility. Soil.

Perhaps I need to be planted as a seed again into earth’s wisdom, to go back to spiritual roots, grounded in God’s teaching.

Lord, help me to stay humble.

If I stray, plant me again in your soil to absorb and grow into your goodness.

And, when I need reminding to stay humble, water me again with your tear.
