During a daily Mass, people were reverently quiet in prayer. The Scripture readings were proclaimed, the homily delivered, and as the Consecration began, I noticed persistent singing from outside. A mocking bird, no doubt! She joined in prayerful chorus with us, as we worshiped and thanked our Creator for life and love. She continued singing all the way through to the end of Mass and beyond! As we left the celebration, I heard her loud and clear, in a tree near the church’s entrance. Her song filled the air on this sunny autumn day.
In the early Church, people gathered “from every nation under heaven,” and “were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim… and each one heard them speaking in their own language.” (Acts 2:4,6)
The mockingbird wonderfully imitates other bird songs. She proclaimed her way of worship in such a way that perhaps other birds could understand, in their own language. She kept on singing after the Mass was ended. How we can learn from her joyful proclamation?
Go forth, and bring your song into the world!
